The Union government approved the establishment of a public Wi-Fi network in the name of (PM-WANI). Prime Minister Wi-Fi Access Network Interface is an attempt by the Indian government to increase internet connectivity in India.
HOW To implement
This would be provided through Public Data Offices (PDOs). Union telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad approving the framework for the scheme, and called the planned revolutionary. Said that the government is planning to unleash a massive WI-FI revolution in the country. It is truly revolutionary. The framework includes multiple elements like the Public Data Office(PDO), Public Data Office aggregators, and app providers to deliver public Wi-Fi services.
The Public Data Office or the PDO will be opened across the country. The PDO or the public data centers will establish, maintain, and operate only PM-WANI compliant Wi-Fi access points. This will help to deliver broadband services to the subscribers.
The public data office aggregator or the PDOA will provide you with information regarding public data centers to make your life easier. These data centers will perform functions relating to authorization and accounting.
There will be no requirement for the categories of PDO’s aggregators will work closely with the PDO’s and app providers. They have to register through an online portal, Saral Sanchar. And there will be no registration fees. The app providers register on the website, the application will be approved after scrutiny within a week.
The app provider will develop an app, which will help you discover a PM-WANI compliant hotspot in the nearby area to connect it to access the service. To maintain all the data, a central registry will be formed and maintained by C-DOT.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this scheme becomes history. This will increase internet connectivity in India. Which in turn boosts the ease of doing business and ease of living in India.
Implementing it in a country like India is a huge task. As a consumer, what can you expect with a scheme the government is aiming to create public Wi-Fi networks across the country, which you can access to browse the internet.
There is a provision for third parties to develop an App that can be downloaded by you to access the nearest Wi-Fi network. You can access public Wi-Fi hotspots at a large number of restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and other places across the country.
The model of public Wi-Fi has already been successful in several countries like the US and countries from the European Union. People in these countries already use Wi-Fi in cafes, restaurants, public places, and public transportation.
This app will give information about Wi-Fi spots. Customers can access the network after authentication done through the App.
The Ministry has stated that no license fee will be charged for providing internet services. Availability of the internet will increase income, employment, ease of doing business. The Ministry added.
